WORCESTER, MA – A sport created in Massachusetts could be just the right activity to raise money, reenergize athletic programs, and help in the fight against childhood obesity.  The sport, called super scoreball, begins with a tug of war at center field, and then requires players to use a combination of soccer and basketball skills to score points through openings set atop the towers which are mounted to the sides of soccer nets. Colleges, Universities, and private clubs are being encouraged to form their own teams during 2008 and 2009 and may be invited to a national championship during 2008.

The governing organization for the sport is the World Super Scoreball Federation, managed by cofounders of the sport, Daniel Hartwell of Worcester, Ronald Perreault of Whitinsville, and Mark Wilmot of North Oxford. The three Massachusetts men began their quest to develop a new sport and fight childhood obesity during the Fall of 2003 according to Super Scoreball Commissioner Mark Wilmot, who believes it’s just a matter of time before the game takes off. "Over the past four years, we’ve had the opportunity to conduct sports market research, ask for input from athletes, and play the game over and over. People who play super scoreball say it's more fun than basketball, and a huge improvement over soccer. It won’t replace basketball or soccer right away, but it’s going to be a great addition to sports programs currently offered at schools and universities, plus its going to provide millions of people with another fun way to engage in physical fitness and team sports."

If there was ever a time for a new team sport, this could be it. Warnings are being sounded daily about the rise in childhood obesity. Those warnings are attracting the attention of people at the highest levels of America. Former President Clinton announced he is working with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and fitness cheerleader Richard Simmons is speaking to people at the White House as part of the effort to slow the alarming weight gain in America’s children. Simmons wants to get physical education back into America's schools. Major corporations, including the fast-food giants, care about the obesity problem too, and they are creating new diet options and launching programs with the same goal of combating the massive weight gain trend among children.
